Ute Mahler

Ute Mahler (German, born in 1949) is the daughter of photographer Ludwig Schirmer and studied photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (HGB) (Academy of Graphic Design and Book Design) in Leipzig between 1969 and 1974. In her photographs from the 1970s and 1980, Mahler documents life in the GDR with haunting intensity. She has been married to photographer Werner Mahler for more than 40 years. Since 1975 she has been working as a freelance photographer for magazines like Sibylle and Sonntag, and after the fall of the Wall also for Stern, among others. In 1990 she became one of the founding members of OSTKREUZ Agentur der Fotografen (Photographers’ Agency). Since the year 2000 she has been professor of photography at the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (University of Applied Sciences) in Hamburg, and has been teaching at the OSTKREUZSCHULE für Fotografie und Gestaltung (School for Photography and Design) since 2005.
