Dieter Appelt

*1935

Dieter Appelt (German, born 1935) studied music in Leipzig and West Berlin from 1954 to 1958 before studying experimental photography with Heinz Hajek-Halke at the Hochschule der Künste in West Berlin. Appelt also sang at the Deutsche Oper Berlin before devoting himself from 1979 on exclusively to sculpture, action- and installation art. His own body is the focus of the nature-oriented, ritualistic performances that he documents in film, photography, and installation pieces. He served on the faculty of the department of fine arts at the Hochschule der Künste (now the Universität der Künste) from 1982 to 2002, becoming dean of that department in 1996. He has been a member of Berlin’s Akademie der Künste since 1997.
