Werner Mahler

*1950

Werner Mahler (German, born in 1950) studied photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (HGB) (Academy of Graphic Design and Book Design) in Leipzig from 1973 to 1978, and worked as a freelance commercial and fashion photographer from 1978 onwards. Like his wife of more than 40 years, Ute Mahler, in his photographs Werner Mahler documents life in the GDR with a strong yet poetic intensity. In 1990 he became one of the founding members of OSTKREUZ Agentur für Fotografen (Photographers’ Agency) in Berlin and to this day remains its managing director. In 2005, together with Thomas Sandberg he founded the OSTKREUZSCHULE für Fotografie und Gestaltung (School for Photography and Design) Berlin. His work often features historic photo-equipment, such as the camera obscura, or large-format cameras.
